Research Institute
Hyogo and Kobe are home to two of the five "national core technology" facilities, as well as universities, public research institutes, and private research institutes, creating a research infrastructure that is world-class in both quality and quantity.
Kobe area
With the formation of the Kobe Medical Industry City, Kobe Port Island is becoming a center for research and development of advanced medical technology and a cluster of medical-related industries. In addition, the supercomputer "Fugaku" will be available for shared use from March 2021.
Harima Science Garden City
Harima Science Garden City, located in the southwestern part of Hyogo Prefecture, is the hub of a cluster of ultrafine analysis and research facilities, including SPring-8, one of the world's largest synchrotron radiation facilities. SPring-8 is not only used for academic research, but is also actively used by companies, with approximately 20% of its use being for industrial purposes. It is also expected to have a synergistic effect with SACLA, an X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) facility that opened in March 2012 and is a nationally critical technology.
